The entire operation is thought to have set the sheikh back around £20,000.

It seems likely that the unusual move will spark concern among environmentalists. "This car doesn’t have a carbon footprint – more of a crater," one worker at the airport told the newspaper. An annoyed cargo handler added: "It would have been far more efficient to fly mechanics out there."

Also expressing her concern, Jenny Evans at anti-aviation lobbyists Plane Stupid said that the five-figure oil check "horrifies me", and Richard Dyer at Friends of the Earth branded the sheikh's behaviour "ludicrous".

The anonymous - and very rich - Qatari did win support from David Price at Lamborghini Club UK, however. "If an owner wants to service his car in that way, it is his choice," he said.

"I'm not surprised. Thankfully the age of excess in some areas continues."

Source: The Sun

-

There was nothing on the paper that would
signify that it was a threat of any form."
The principal at Payne Junior High School kept the actual drawing, and
officials with the Chandler Unified School District declined to release
any information about the situation.
"Federal privacy law forbids the school or district from discussing
student discipline," the station was told.
Mosteller said her son was just idly drawing pictures, and ended up with
a fake laser.
"He was just basically doodling and not thinking a lot about it," she
said. "We're not advocates for guns. We don't have guns in our home. We
don't promote the use of guns. My son was just basically doodling on a
piece of paper."
School officials who initially banned the student for five days lowered
the penalty to three days after discussing the situation with the boy's
father.
"I just can't believe that there wasn't another way to resolve this,"
Mosteller told the Associated Press. "He's so upset. The school made him
feel like he committed a crime. They are doing more damage than good."
The drawing did not show blood or bullets. Nor did it show injuries or
target anyone, the Mostellers said. It just resembled a gun.
Terry Locke, a spokesman for the district, told the AP the sketch was
"absolutely considered a threat," and threatening words or pictures are
punishable.
However, the school failed to contact police, and failed to provide
counseling or an evaluation for the student to determine if he intended
it as a threat, officials said.
The student's father, Ben Mosteller, said school officials told him how
serious they considered the situation, and discussed the 1999 massacre
at Colorado's Columbine High School, where two teens shot and killed 12
students and a teacher, and injured dozens more.
That, he said, was extreme and offensive. The family already has
contacted the district's governing board about the incident.
The station said it checked the rules students must follow at school,
and found there's nothing in a portion of the student handbook that
addresses conduct to indicate the drawing of a weapon poses threat.
Participants in a local newspaper forum were irritated.
"If school officials believed this to be a threat, they are in violation
of state law by failing to make a police report. Suspend them," said
"Bobo A."
"This once great land of ours (now someone else's) gets SICKER by the
day. Not the year, not the month, not the week, but by the DAY. Dennis
Prager asked a very interesting question: How did the "Greatest
Generation" give birth to the "Most Stupid Generation?" (my
paraphrase)," added "loamy l."
Prager, a WND columnist, recently reported on the case in McMinnville,
Ore., where students created something called "slap butt day" at Patton
Middle School.
He reported that on one such day in February, "Two boys tore down the
hall of Patton Middle School after lunch, swatting the bottoms of girls
as they ran – what some kids later said was a common form of greeting.
But bottom-slapping is against policy in McMinnville Public Schools. So
a teacher's aide sent the gawky seventh-graders to the office, where the
vice principal and a police officer stationed at the school soon
interrogated them."
The students were read their Miranda rights and hauled in handcuffs to
jail, where they spent the next five days.
All because the Yamhill County district attorney, Bradley Berry, brought
felony sex charges against the two boys. When he finally explained
himself under pressure from the media, Berry told the Oregonian, "From
our perspective and the perspective of the victims, this was not just
horseplay."
But Prager reported the girls, in fact, did regard it as horseplay. And
they claimed from virtually the outset that they had been pressured into
making a case against the boys.
"Our beloved country is flipping out. The effects of The Age of
Stupidity ushered in during the '60s and '70s are omnipresent. It is
highly doubtful that there is a living member of the World War II
generation who could have imagined that seventh-graders would one day be
brought in shackles into an American courtroom for playfully swatting a
girl's buttocks," Prager wrote.
--
*Thomas J. Pitre, Sequimarian said...

I prefer to be known as a Sequimarian, rather than a Sequimite or Sequimer. Sequimarian has a more elegant tone to it than something that approaches another name for a member of the isoptera insect family.

Sequimarian approaches Centarian, which I hope to be someday. It is also near to librarian, which also has a more elegant sound to it. Not to forget the Bostonian, or the Bostonian Librarian, for that matter.

The suffix, "ian" means: related to or resembling, and we -- as residents, certainly are related to Sequim.

Regarding bike racks. Excellent idea, along with areas marked for scooters, electric cycles, electric trikes, etc.

There is never enough room in front of or adjacent to store fronts. I've been waiting for the BENCHES that someone suggested some time ago. It's nice to walk downtown, but if there is no place to sit, then it's a problem, like Las Vegas, because they want you inside, sucking up smoke and dropping quarters in their slot machines.

I hope we can have a shaded walk, with tulips planted in brick planters that serve as benches. Boulder has had this in their downtown core for years, and it is one of the most "walker" and people-friendly towns I've ever been in.

Let's set our goals a little higher for the downtown core. A little piece at a time is less costly, but the little piece at a time approach has not worked in so many ways. I'm referring to our lime green crosswalks, the Texas cattle guard "gate" at the W. end of town, planters in the middle of the road, cut-outs, high plants blocking views on major roads, no turn lanes, etc., etc. All these were attempts to control traffic, beautify the core, but failed in so many ways. Do it right the first time, I hope.

T. Pitre
Sequimarian
8:22 PM

Here is the full breakdown of this car's astounding luxury features. Here is what you do: You pull up alongside the car just in front of a parking space. You put your car in reverse, which activates the rear camera and sensors. A diagram of arrows appears on the nav screen. You indicate where you want the car to go. You press Park and let go of the wheel.

Then: Take a sip of your Remy Martin and send $50,000 to the Republican Party as you silently give thanks to the Gods of Saudi Arabia and megacorporate conglomerates that your tax bracket is so stratospheric that it still affords you a massive V8 luxury automobile in the age of war and oil ravages and unchecked gluttony and the meltdown of Antarctica. The steering wheel starts to spin and the tires start to turn and millions of years of human evolution converge onto a single surreal moment, and in about 10 seconds, the car has parked itself.

And there you have it. Proof of God. Proof that God, clearly, has a wicked sense of humor. Proof that God drinks far, far more heavily than you. Proof that God sees the deep irony of life, and war, and oil, cars, cognac, parking spaces, everything, and laughs demonically. There is simply no other explanation. ...

Dates on labels? Here's what you need to know

The latest spinach food scare, which has claimed at least one life and sickened 183 other people, took many by surprise. After all, previous E. coli bacteria outbreaks were mostly associated with raw meat.

Nervous folks are peering more closely at dates stamped on the produce they buy from supermarkets. But how helpful are these dates really? Many of them are actually quite confusing. 'Is a food fresh until Feb. 1, 2008, if that's the date stamped on it, and then do you throw it out on Feb. 2?' asks Jeanne Goldberg, professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University. 'It's a very inexact science since those dates include a wide margin of safety.'

From police encounters to airport security, from political protests to public buses, your right to move around freely without 'accounting for yourself' is increasingly challenged.

The Identity Project (IDP) exists to uphold the freedom to exist, wander, and live anonymously within our own country if we so choose. We believe all Americans have the fundamental right to exist without seeking or getting permission of the government, to live without constantly proving who we are or why we are here, to freely move around our country. IDP explores and defends these rights.

IDP questions the motives behind, and effectiveness of, identity based domestic security programs and asks whether the degradation of our civil liberties is justified."

A company named Redux Beverages last week introduced the product, which it called “the legal alternative” to the expensive, illicit and life-destroying drug.

Redux promises that “doing Cocaine” yields a better rush than drinks like Red Bull, but without the comedown. The effects last five hours, the company says. The drink is 350 times as strong as Red Bull, thanks to having more simple sugars and vitamin B-12.

The man responsible for Cocaine is Jamie Kirby, chief of Redux Beverages, based in Las Vegas. He told the Australian news site News.com.au that the drink’s kick also relies on “some psychological effect.”

One woman who tried Cocaine, the energy drink, told the site, “I don’t like the tingly feeling in my chest. I feel my heart racing and I’m not being paranoid ... I feel looped.”

Except for the lack of paranoia, it sounds as if Redux at least got the formula about right." Whether we are in Customer Service and dealing with angry customers or school administrators dealing with angry parents, handling an irate person and being able to lead them to a more calm — and logical — state can be a very desired skill.

The most common mistake that people make is to assume that when someone is out of control, we should calm our voices to model the desired state we wish the person to have. The assumption is that the other person will match us and a calm and logical conversation can then take place. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. Instead, because of the calm demeanor, the complainant doesn’t feel heard. Their rationale is that since the listener is not as outraged as they are, they must not have been listening or they don’t believe what was shared. The result is no trust so the person remains angry and outraged.

A better approach is called “Pace and Lead”. The first step is to match the complainant’s emotional intensity. This is not agreeing with the person. This is simply responding with the same emotions that are being presented. If you don't have a passport and think you might need one, now is the time to get it. In many countries, including the United States, passports will soon be equipped with RFID chips. And you don't want one of these chips in your passport.

RFID stands for 'radio-frequency identification.' Passports with RFID chips store an electronic copy of the passport information: your name, a digitized picture, etc. And in the future, the chip might store fingerprints or digital visas from various countries.

By itself, this is no problem. But RFID chips don't have to be plugged in to a reader to operate. Like the chips used for automatic toll collection on roads or automatic fare collection on subways, these chips operate via proximity. This data represents changes in prices of all goods and services purchased for consumption by urban households. This index value has been calculated every year since 1913. For the current year, the latest monthly index value is used. In 2002, for example, it took $17.89 to buy what $1 bought in 1913. Note that in 1920, it cost $2.02, and declined in 1925 and through the 1930s, illustrating the effect of the Great Depression, when prices slumped. Prices did not pass $2 again until 1950.

Bush's approach to military spending is essentially a higher-priced version of what went on under the Suharto regime in Indonesia, in which corporations connected to the military and the President's inner circle had the inside track on lucrative government contracts. And there's now plenty of money to go around. The military budget has increased from $300 billion per year to more than $400 billion annually since George W. Bush took office. And the invasion and occupation of Iraq will cost at least another $200 billion over the next three to five years.

US policy is now based on what's good for Chevron, Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Bechtel, not what's good for the average citizen. Dick Cheney's ties to arms and oil conglomerate Halliburton are just the tip of the iceberg: At least thirty-two top officials in the Bush Administration served as executives or paid consultants to major weapons contractors before joining the Administration."

According to Zetter, the site is the “technical command center from which the company manages all the routers and circuits carrying the company's domestic and international Internet traffic. Therefore, [the site] could be instrumental for conducting surveillance or collecting data.”

We’ve heard a bit about this before. Back in January, Mark Klein, a former AT&T technician, became a witness in a class-action lawsuit filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation against AT&T, charging the company with illegally taking part in a NSA domestic-surveillance program. Klein alleged the existence of government surveillance operations in AT&T offices in San Francisco an in Bridgeton, Missouri, near St. Louis, according to AT&T documents.

Zetter’s Salon story cites two sources who worked at the Bridgeton facility but who had never actually entered in the room in question, or even -- amazingly -- asked the people who worked in it what they were doing, even though the sources had been told by others at the company that “employees working inside the room were ‘monitoring network traffic’ and that the room was being used by ‘a government agency.’”

From there, Zetter -- who has won several awards for her investigative and feature reporting -- builds a case about what could be going on in the room, which leads to a story populated with more than its fair share of “could be’s” and “might’s,” with a frustrating lack of concrete evidence to confirm the suspicions of the employees, technology experts and former NSA hands she speaks to, all of whom say the operation smells like an NSA program.

Source: Paul McLeary, CJR Daily

Legislation is currently being considered in the Senate that was passed by the House that will make the Internet much more like cable TV, much more commercial, and controlled much more by only a few companies for both content and capacity.
The current banner of the dispute is Net Neutrality. Civic organizations nationwide have been lobbying for net neutrality, only to have major telecoms control the debate and outcome.

A better motto is: Keep the Internet as a national resource, not a national revenue source.

Please take this last opportunity. Maria Cantwell could easily be a deciding voice.

Wayne Bowen
President, Sequim PC User Group
